Auditor-General holds the second Consultative Meeting with the Chairpersons of select Parliamentary Audit Committees

Heads of Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices (CCIOs) held a public lecture at the University of Nairobi to take stock of their progress for the last ten years.
The theme of this year’s event is, ‘Celebrating a Decade of promoting constitutionalism and observance of democratic values and principles.’
The Speakers explained how policy, legal and regulatory reforms have impacted on their performance and what should be done to enhance service delivery in line with the CCIOs constitutional mandate.
The session also provided an avenue for the public to participate and directly engage with the CCIOs top leadership.
The Auditor-General, CPA Nancy Gathungu, CBS, was among the speakers at the plenary and shared insights on, ‘financial prudence and oversight,’ which is one of thematic areas for the forum.
The Auditor-General explained that auditors look beyond figures and their clients’ ability to balance books of accounts, as they seek to evaluate how the various initiatives or projects done make a difference to lives and livelihoods.
“For every action or activity initiated by the government involving use of public funds, we need to ensure that it was planned for, budgeted for, and funds spent in accordance with the plan,” she said.
Other speakers at the event included; Mr. Gershom Otachi- the Chairman National Lands Commission (NLC), Mr. Wafula Chebukati- Chairman IEBC, Prof. Kameri Mbote-Director Legal United Nations Environmental Programme/University of Nairobi (UoN), Dr. Joyce Mutinda- Chairperson National Gender and Equality Commission, Prof. Ben Sihanya-UoN and Hon. Florence Kajuju Chairperson Commission on Administrative Justice(CAJ).
The CCIOs were established by Constitution of Kenya, 2010 to not only discharge their mandate as stipulated under the Constitution but to also meet the common objective of protecting the sovereignty of the people of Kenya; securing observance by all State Organs of democratic values and principles; and promoting Constitutionalism (Article 249)
